What is Bag-in-Box?

Bag-in-Box is a single-use packaging solution, ideal for storing the contents in the bag. It consists of three elements:

A strong bladder or plastic bag, contained in a box, usually made of several layers of metallized foil that forms a barrier to light.
A box, usually made of corrugated cardboard, through which no light penetrates.
An airtight dispenser or faucet consisting of a one-way valve that prevents oxygen and moisture from coming into contact with the olive oil.

What are the enemies of extra virgin olive oil?
Light, heat and oxygen are three enemies of extra virgin olive oil. When it has prolonged and constant contact with any of these, the extra virgin olive oil will go rancid or go bad very quickly.
In a conventional container such as a glass bottle, when we pour out the olive oil, we can expect an equal amount of oxygen and moisture to go into the bottle. Exposure to oxygen and moisture is exacerbated if the bottle is half empty or uncapped.

Bag-in-Box packaging solves two BIG problems: light and oxygen

The bag and corrugated cardboard provide double protective layers for any light penetration into the olive oil.
When the bag dispenses the olive oil through the tap, the bag collapses and keeps the air away from the olive oil.
The push-button faucet, which is attached to the bag, has a one-way valve that prevents air and oxygen from entering the bag and coming into contact with the olive oil.

Preserve freshness and taste
Bag-in-Box can therefore consistently maintain the freshness and aromatic taste of olive oil for a longer period of time compared to when it is packaged in a glass bottle or can, especially after it has been opened.

A study conducted by the University of Córdoba has shown that Bag-in-Box has the lowest oxidation in terms of its peroxide value, and K270 and K232 compared to glass bottles, PET bottles and tin cans, while PET bottle packaging has the highest oxidation rate .

Bag-in-Box preserves the quality and extends the shelf life of olive oil. It protects the olive oil from exposure to air and from contact with oxygen when opened.

Other benefits
It is striking that the advantages of Bag-in-Box are the weight, cost, size and environmental friendliness.

Bag-in-Box is light. For a 5 liter Bag-in-Box it weighs 5 kg. For an equivalent of 5 liters in glass bottles, that is a whopping 9.2 kg.
The packaging costs of Bag-in-Box, compared to a glass bottle or can, are relatively cheaper and thus make the olive oil more affordable.
We can also decant just enough olive oil into a bottle we like for our daily use, and refill the bottle when it’s empty. Unlike a glass bottle, we must consume the olive oil within one to two months after opening to enjoy the freshness and flavors.

Bag-in-Box contains a larger volume of content, such as 3, 5 or 10 liters up to 20 to 1000 ltr. So less packaging or labeling is needed. The material used is lighter than the other plastic alternatives, reducing the environmental footprint during transport.
Because the olive oil stays fresh longer, we won’t throw away bottles that we don’t finish in time, which means less wasted.
